In an article by Dr Stella Bosire in the Daily Nation of 5th November, 2025 entitled “Policy Failure to blame for Kenya’s contraceptive crisis”, Dr Bosire did not mention the multiple adverse effects suffered by women who use artificial contraceptives, or the wonderful modern natural birth spacing methods (Natural Family Planning, NFP) recognized and studied by the World Health Organization (WHO). These methods align with and respect the natural physiology (function) and anatomy (structure) of the reproductive system.

Medicine is the study of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease. Pregnancy is not a disease. It is for this reason that, prior to 1985 when I joined medical school, contraceptives were not classified as medicines but “street drugs”, that were not allowed within a kilometre of any hospital .

NFP, which has a sound scientific basis, is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “methods for planning or avoiding pregnancies by observation of the natural signs and symptoms of the fertile and infertile phase of the menstrual cycle“. Studies show that modern NFP methods have a high efficacy, low failure rate and broad applicability as a means of empowering women to monitor their health, manage infertility and achieve pregnancy.

In her article, Dr Bosire failed to mention the hundreds of ongoing lawsuits against Pfizer Inc., which manufactures Depo-Provera (an injectable hormonal contraceptive), after studies showed that its users were five times more likely to develop brain cancers (meningiomas) than women who did not use it. Indeed, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recognizes hormonal contraceptives as Group I Carcinogens, which also cause other cancers, including breast and cervical cancer. Additional severe complications of Depo Provera include increased transmissibility of HIV from men to women, ectopic pregnancy, anaphylaxis, (deadly allergy), injection site reactions, liver function disorders, convulsions, bleeding irregularities, weight gain, fluid retention/bloating, poor return of fertility, interference with laboratory tests, headaches/migraine, decreased libido, dizziness, nervousness, weakness and fatigue.

In “The Citizens’ Petition on Hormonal Contraceptives”, a group of doctors and researchers petitioned the FDA and ordered for the complete removal of Depo from the market, as well as mandatory Black Box warnings against ALL hormonal contraceptives, whose adverse effects may include serious cardiovascular events (heart diseases), including thromboembolic disorders (deadly blood clots), stroke, inflammatory bowel disease, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), depression and suicide. Additional effects include Multiple Sclerosis (MS), bone fractures, body mass effects (weight gain), urogenital problems including Female Sexual Dysfunction (FSD), irritability and marital discord.

Postinor (P2) pills, widely sold over the counter and used repeatedly for “emergency intercourse” is abortifacient (induces abortion); each pill containing the equivalent of 25 contraceptive pills (750micrograms of Levonorgestrel).

As a medical doctor, Dr Stella Bosire has the duty to practice the principles of medical ethics required by the Hippocratic Oath – non-maleficence (do no harm), beneficence (always do good), informed consent (patient autonomy, including the right to refuse any “treatment”), and justice (best practice, evidence-based medicine). This is in keeping with the Constitution of Kenya Article 43, which guarantees the right of every citizen to the highest attainable standard of health, and Article 35 which guarantees the right to information held by the state or by another person that is required to protect a fundamental freedom (autonomy).

Doctors’ clients have a right to fertility education; the girl-child ought to be familiar with her unique ovulation cycle, because ovulation is the central event of her cycle, and a sign of health. They have a right to know the mechanism of action and the adverse effects and failure rates of all artificial contraceptives. Other methods include the 100% abortifacient Intrauterine Contraceptive Device (IUD/Coil), barrier methods like condoms and spermicides, sterilization which includes vasectomy and fallopian tubal ligation. “Vaccines” suspected to have antifertility effects include “anti tetanus vaccines”, which are suspected to include beta-HCG (exposed by Kenya Catholic Doctors Association, KCDA, in 2014), and the latest Covid 19 mRNA “vaccines”.

The time is ripe for a wider dissemination of information about modern natural birth spacing methods, including the public, medical school and nursing curriculums. Modern NFP is the healthiest birth spacing method because health is defined as “the complete physical, mental, family, spiritual and environmental wellbeing of a person, and not just the absence of infirmity” (Vitae et Humanae, Nairobi, 2019). It involves effective communication between spouses. The beauty and mystery of conjugal love in marriage is that the marital embrace is a “total unconditional gift of self” to one’s spouse. Users of natural family planning have the lowest divorce rates in the world.
